April challenge: a photo a day

So, continuing with the ‘let’s see what new things we can try our hand at’ theme, this month I decided to try my hand at a photo a day challenge.

This lovely little number came courtesy of Fat mum slim (find her on Instagram fatmumslim #fmsphotoaday)

I’ve only recently fallen back in love with my camera after having an off/on relationship for a couple of years! This photo of challenge was a great way to make me think about my photographs rather than be snap happy as I usually am!

I will confess – I didn’t complete the challenge. I had a couple of days where I couldn’t find time to do it and I found it difficult to take photographs on the weekend of my brother’s anniversary. But hey ho! I’m not going to feel too guilty as I thoroughly enjoyed the shots I did do (focus on the positives).

Here are some of my favourites…

I am always going to sneak in a few flowers here and there…

…and interesting plants!

I also enjoyed documenting a few days out…

This new venture

It’s hard not to compare your photographs to others  – and some were absolutely amazing, let me tell you. But there is opportunity for learning in everything, so I focused on the positives and vowed to keep practising.

Moving forward is better than standing still.

I also learned that prompts are open to interpretation and feel that we can relate this to our lives. How you see things may not be how others see them and that’s okay. The world needs your story – so be you and tell your story your way.

Keep going, continually moving forward and you will keep improving.

It’s the little things 01/05/16

It’s the little things that make me want to break out the good china, eat ice cream straight from the tub and drink wine on a school night.

Here’s a round up of all the little things from my week that made me smile.

Things you need to know about me #7

image

I love holding hands.

When my kids were little I used to love, I mean really love holding their hands.

I still remember the day when my son said he didn’t want to hold my hand anymore. It was a Monday morning and we were on our way to school. I remember quietly walking alongside him, a giant void between us.

He was six and I was heartbroken.

Luckily I’m married to a man who likes to hold my hand. Connection is really important to me and two occasions specifically stand out where hand holding placed a bookmark in my memories.

The first was our wedding day.

We held hands from the minute I joined him at the front of the church. I remember afterwards people saying how cute it was that we held hands throughout the service and what a great idea it was. It wasn’t planned – it just felt natural.

The second was the night my brother died.

I came home in the early hours of the morning after the longest day of my life and fell into bed. We held hands as we slept. No words necessary.

Holding hands for me induces a feeling of safety and comfort but not everyone feels the same. As a therapeutic play worker I see many children with sensory issues, so I understand the power of touch. Some need their space and cannot bear to be touched. Some however need sensory stimulation: to stroke things, twist things, shake things and pop things. To some, nothing is more soothing than silky sand pouring through their fingers.

Whether you seek sensory stimulation or avoid it – the most sensitive parts of your body are literally at your fingertips.

I have such gratitude for my  hands – as well as holding hands, I can paint, blow kisses at loved ones,  give hugs, wave, clap in celebration, eat, write and type, lift weights, do yoga, hold handbags (and cocktail glasses!), paint my nails and stroke my little dog.

Hands are pretty fabulous really. My life wouldn’t be the same without them.

Tell me, how amazing are your hands?

PS. It’s been a while since I’ve written one of these posts – if you’d like to find out more fun facts about me; check out my series Things you need to know about me.

When will you be happy?

image

If I asked you this…could you give me an answer?

Perhaps it would be…when I have the job of my dreams, when I find my Prince Charming, when I lose half a stone, when the kids have grown up, when the house is finished, next week, next month, next year….

When, when, when…

What if we acknowledged that all we have is right now?

This very minute. Would you be able to find happiness? Could you look at this moment with different eyes?

Happiness – it’s about enjoying where you are, on the way to where you’re going.

I said that.

Happiness comes from within. It’s a choice…right here, right now, whatever your situation. Stop looking for the ‘when‘ and lean into the ‘now‘.

Be happy with who you are, where you are, with what you have.

Why not be happy now?

What’s the worst that can happen?

P.S  Check out my weekly series It’s the little things  where I share with you all the things that have made me happy.
